Hi, Everyone,

My name is Annabelle, I am from NYC area and I became fascinated with contact juggling about a month ago after stumbling across it on youtube. When I first saw the video, I did not even know what it was called. I got my first stage ball 2 weeks ago and I am learning... sort of. This the most maddening, frustrating, cool thing I ever tried to do and the most amazing part of it is that I keep trying.

I am kind of halfway to a windshield wiper (new job, not enough time to practice). My biggest problem right now is getting the ball from the palm to the cradle. Either I have to do a little toss and the ball is up in the air, or my fingers naturally bend like I am beginning to make a fist. I know I have a lot of practice ahead before I get real results but I keep feeling that I doing something wrong to begin with...

Anyway, back to it. If I can get the ball from behind the dresser where it rolled on the last pass :?

Nice to meet you !!!

Thanks for the welcome, Elsie.
I am beginning to feel the coming of a major CJ addiction here and I just started. By the way, silly question, but how do you upload an avatar picture to go with your user name. It's not in the user profile, or i am missing it?

Welcome to the .org!
Just keep working on the windshield wiper and you'll get it. I don't think a bit of a toss is bad when your learning. The idea is to work on it so that you have to toss it less and less until it doesn't really leave contact. It's still kind of a toss even then though. If you haven't already, there are plenty of tutorials on that trick and others that you can watch. Also, make sure to practice the trick in both hands.

As for the avatar question, here's how I get to it: Click "user control panel" -> On the left under options, click the "profile button" -> Over where you clicked the profile button there are now other options. Click "edit avatar". Hope that helps.

Welcome Annabelle

If your fingers naturally curl when trying to do a windshield wiper, why not go with it and try to learn a butterfly first instead? Some people are naturally stiff, some are naturally flowy... windshield and butterfly are essentially different (stiff and flowy) expressions of the same move. Windshield, the arm is straight all the way and the ball moves in an arc. Butterfly, the arm bends slightly at the wrist and the fingertips and the ball moves in more of a figure eight pattern. Give it a try, it might be more comfortable for you, we all learn different things with different ease.

I'll try. So it's okay to have the fingers bend in the butterfly? I thought it was just bad form on my part. I misspoke in my first post. My fingers bend when I am trying to get ball from cradle to palm, which can't be right. By the way, I'd be happy to learn the windshield wiper or a butterfly or anything. The way the move looks now is an unholy mess.

Can I just say, you are all so cool. Just watched some videos on the site. This isn't human.

You're right - fingers should NOT curl when passing the ball over the fingertips. Also, when you're training the move, keep your elbow from pulling in toward your hip - that's the other b.fly killer and will prevent you from connecting it to other moves. The only difference between "butterfly" and "windshield wiper" is whether your elbow slides from left to right while you're doing it - moving the elbow looks nicer, but if you're doing it before the move is comfortable then it's probably happening as one of those coping mechanisms that make your butterfly plateau and suck forever (like curling your fingers to drop the ball into your palm). You should train the move with the elbows pretty much fixed in space and then break the "don't move your elbow" rule once the move is comfortable.
