I was wondering if folks had any tips on learning isolated rolls? I've been working on and off for quite a while on an isolated outside arm roll and don't seem to be making much progress at all.

hmm, mine aren't the cleanest so I might not be the best person to ask but the trickiest part (for me at least ) is getting a clean release from any static positions (ie cradle, palm) into the roll - you need it to be as smooth as possible in giving the ball it's momentum before pushing yourself under it to match it's velocity and isolate.

I found starting from a claw grip (for an easy release) and sliding my other arm (palm down) from across my body under the ball at a constant speed was a good way to get used to the speed of the roll. catch in another claw to rince and repeat..

also for some rolls you'll have to activley compensate for certain habits you have for your conventional rolls. forearm rolls for instance you really have to temper the vertical up down drop at the elbow you might do there for a much more forward angle.

and I guess keep light on your toes and move into your rolls with your whole body too, being too rigid on these actually hinders rather than sharpens the isolation..

Are you trying to isolate the actual roll? or are you trying to make the ball appear isolated and under your control with the other hand?

Rails.

All about hitting the same point with the 'isolation' as you perform a wave.

What if the point in space was a ball, that I already know is still and unable to move?

Oh. That works.

:)

Mind games, innit.

Six months ago I'd have thought you were talking mumbo jumbo with this Ed, but yeah, I'm just starting to get how it works with simpler isolations like enigmas. Literally believing the ball is a fixed point really does help.

Arnar, I'm trying to isolate the ball while doing the roll.

Yeah, visualizations like Ed describes really help. Breathing is also necessary. Soon as I stop breathing during an isolated outside arm roll, it turns to crap.

arnar was that to me? if so the method i described above was to release with other hand and practice the roll, but you can claw grip with your nails too so the ball slides and is still controlled by the other hand too for a feel of the path or 'rail'.

Bear in mind that you have to move from your shoulders and waist much more too, so get nice and warmed up in to a session before busting these out..
