I have a question. There is a moment when you "welcome" the crowd and another when you ask for tips letting people know the show is over. I'd fix these two moments as the beginning and the end of a single show. Then the audience will be recycled, hopefully and I suppose tricks will be repeated with variations. Well: how long should a single performance be?
Thanks a lot.

Carlo

as i am now busking full time i wanted to share some of my thoughts...in my experience if you can make them laugh, you might get paid, if you can amaze them, you will probably get paid, but if you can do both, you will definitely get paid. As my show is completely mimed I use different techniques, but mostly the same stuff, spoken with the body. As far as the flirting thing goes, this works like a charm for me, I'll do the "call me" gesture, mouth WOOOOWWWWW during an enigma, a bit of clownish posturing for applause. I think all streeters could benefit from a little mime work, it goes nicely with the ball, if it fits your persona. One thing I have told a few other toss jugglers I have met is you have to visually pop out. If you are dressed normally, the ball has to do all of the work, but if you are costumed properly, that is already setting you apart and more importantly setting the tone of your manipulation, for me this is a very important element and what really takes the work up to performance level and out of the "public practice". It also does another key thing, it removes responsibility for mistakes, it is not me, it is not practice, it is another character in another space, this masking can actually open a lot of innovation in performance, I have found some new stuff worth exploring when really pushing for a crowd.

The one piece of advice that's most important for me is to just keep at it. There are always a million excuses not to perform, too hot, too cold, not enough people, too dark, cops, other performers, fatigue, the list goes on an on, but you can only learn how to do it by being out there, there is no rehearsal for it, you can practice your moves to a T, but nothing will excite you and make you prone to mistakes like being in front of a crowd, especially a street audience, which are extremely unpredictable.

This is so true. I almost got rained out last week and got thinking, "Meh, ball's gonna get hard to hold, the whole crowd just left and ran inside, maybe I'll just can it" but I stayed out anyway and wound up making crazy money.

Speaking of tips and tricks - doing squeeze-ups on a slippery ball (due to either rain or sweat) has a way of getting the ball clean so you can go back to doing thumbholds and enigmas safely...

ZOMG Thread necromancy!!!

Figured I'd share this amusing little line I came up with today:
Tell the audience that what you're up to is a bit of civil disobedience against the law of gravity.
If for whatever reason you should drop not long after this, you can always shout "Police brutality!"
