Reading iMårk's post about performing for free reminded me about something I wanted to ask...

I might have the opportunity to get a paid CJ gig, and I was wondering about the money. Again, like iMårk, I don't particularly enjoy discussing money, but this time I need to give them a number. And here comes the dilemma. I would really love to get this gig (really really love to), but I don't want to sound cheap or give them the idea that I'm not good enough.

So the question is... how much would you charge for a 10min (aprox) CJ gig? The organisers are a bit tight in money, which means it has to be reasonable enough for them to want me and for me to feel I am worth it.

You jugglers out there! Help me! Share your wisdom! I know lots of you do this full time so... HELP!!!

Edit: I'm not asking how much (would) you charge, I'm asking how much would you charge if you were me...

this is difficult, it depends on so many different things. i go from between 50 euro's to 460 euro's depending on time, who is it for, what type of audience, the time of performance. etc.

I know it's a difficult thing to ask... I just have no idea of what would be too much and what too little...

This may help:
Time: 10 minutes aprox
Who is it for: (kind of) a juggling association
Type of audience: jugglers + random people coming to see the show

It's like a gala after a juggling festival, as far as I know it will be in a theatre, at night, and composed by different juggling/circus acts.

To make things easy... what would be the minimum you would charge for this type of gig? Just to have an idea...

the smaller uk conventions have paid me travel and beer on occasion, so around £30-£50.
these aren't gigs though, these are done for love, the money is a great bonus though.

It's not a ten-minute gig when you spend time getting there and setting up and stretching and finding the promoter and getting in costume and performing and waiting for payment and hobnobbing and all.

But they're jugglers, so they don't have a lot of money. Juggling festivals around these parts are typically love gigs (read: little/no pay) as well... so any kind of pay from a juggling festival gala is pretty sweet, especially if you can also get travel and beer from them.

If they've asked for a number and you're completely unsure how to respond, then ask them what's in their budget and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by their answer.

Actually this is not like the conventions you have in the UK (I wish!), and they are doing the gala for the first time this year. They are paying performers for the gig, but they also affirm that they don't have a lot of money to spend, that's why I was confused as to what to ask.

Everything clearer now, will let you know whether I do it in the end!

I was once told (if you're talking face to face) to begin the conversation by saying "I usually charge x..." and then pause. If they look horrified, you follow with "but for you I can work out a deal". If they look smug, you explain why this specific gig is more difficult for you and thus you need more...
