I think its probably the community I live in then, its small and sometimes people know who I am anyway. I think its a bit more like if I see somebody looking, even from a distance, I'll give them a small smile and they might usually come over to me. Though you're right, its entirely subjective.

Also, I do all my busking at a community market, where people will be expecting it.

Oops. I meant to edit the last post.

lots of good tips in here,

as for the eye contact thing, i think it depends, i work with mime/clown style so eye contact is there right off the bat, not aggressive, but welcoming, i pick a person who looks interested, hone in on them with some physical jokes, and their reaction gets the attention of others, I call this person my "crowd cornerstone", for me its usually a middle age to older woman, for some reason they really respond to me (because i'm so hot obviously) and it is NEVER a child, a child will get scared.

One of the toughest bits, and one i still struggle with, is finding a BANG ending, people tend to get mesmerized watching CJ and will just sit there, been doing one recently where I stop juggling then look out, point to the crowd and make a slack, zombie face, then snap myself back awake and make motions at the hat, or zombie walk and mime taking out my wallet and putting all my money in the hat...and so on... i find the stuff that actually makes the most money isn't juggling, it is the jokes, crowd interaction and generalized antics that go along side it that really get people to shell out.

The farmer's market idea is brilliant, I may try that sometime soon. I've been watching youtube videos of jugglers over and over going, "ok...palmspin, wipers, circles, enigma, walking halfpipe, yes, I can do all that...wait, chestroll...nope, not yet. BUT that only takes up like 10 seconds of the show, I can do all the rest, so maybe I too can busk!" Also, I pulled out the acrylic at the Verizon store and had people coming up to look at it after less than 3 minutes of juggling. Also, I'm a refaire gal, so I've got costumes galore, thats sure to make me look more professional...
