I listen to a lot of different types of music, especially blues, and classic rock, like Colin James, Steve Via, etc. I did have a couple years of classic piano training when i was little. Generally i think of myself as well rounded. But i've been asked a few times why i tend not to listen to a lot of modern rap. I have always tried to answer politely. But my brother emailed me this picture the other day, and i think it explains things very well.

I've always found this "modern music" lacking for my taste. I've tried to listen to rap, hip hop, and dubstep. But I just don't feel like I have a connection with the music.

with lyrics like the ones i posted (those are the real lyrics) i wonder about the people that do connect with that song... and i liked rap "back in the day" and some dubstep. I just heard that Nicki Minaj song and couldn't believe it. It has no artist quality to it at all, no talent to be found in any form. WTFudge!

I think that picture is missing some "wub"..

But in all honesty, its a very narrow minded way to look at the music scene. I think the pop-music scene had died decades ago..
And by reading those Nicki lyrics, I'm guessing its hip-hop of some sort, so then its more of an apples to oranges argument. To be fair, you'd have to find some modern rock song. What ever stupidly popular rock artists there are these days, I don't really pay attention.

And perhaps I'm WAY over analyzing this [so please don't take this rant the wrong way] but the music scene has always grown exponentially in whatever direction you chose to see. If you think music was at its best in the 70's, then things will have a tendency to look exponentially worse. If you think rock was just starting out with Led Zeppelin, and you think Nickleback is the bees-knees, then the world of rock has grown to epic proportions.

Music will always change, and much like elder-folks will say that "Back in my day, yaddah yaddah, yaddah" each new artist will seem extra raw, or pushing the limits, or "the most disrespectful thing since spam", when in all actuality, they are just riding the ebb and flow of what society shows as "Acceptable" back when I was a kid, the summer of 93' Mr.Reznor made famous the line "I wanna f*** you like an animal" in Nine Inch Nails' "closer". That was UNBELIEVABLY awful to the parents of the day. Just the same as this Nicki fella [fella?] said some ridiculously lame, un-artful, and repetitive lyrics that don't hold a thread of artistic credibility.

Give it two years, and search again. I'm sure you'll find some terrible song with just as ridiculous lyrics.

I mean hell, 8 years back or so, Eminem was rapping about killing his wife with a chainsaw, and it made him famous. If I remember correctly, he even featured the idea, or reminisced about it in another half-dozen tracks. So down to brass tax, is some guy [perhaps guy..] insulting a "hoe" worse than the lyrical depiction of cold-blooded murder?

Haha, Nicki is a girl [girl?]. But I agree. "Artists" like Nicki Minaj and the Biebs wouldn't be successful if there weren't a market for their brand of "music". You'll just never hear any of that stuff coming from my speakers. Though I do try and listen to all ranges of music.

Also, If you want to scrutinize some lyrics with allegedly "deep" meaning listen to Modest Mouse. They are awesome sauce.

Also also, I think Bri's point is made well in the sudden rise of Dubstep and Dubstep offshoot type music. It once was popular years ago as techno. Ebb and flow . . . kinda like CJ . . .

Bri makes a great point.

Well there is a reason i posted this in "waste products".
It was more shock then anything else at the lyrics and "from my point of view" complete lack or any form of artistic creativity. But i fully admit i'm an opinionated person.
Though i got a thing for 1940 swing and classic blues; I do listen to all kinds of music, from classical to "burp metal"(death metal). This one, hit me with repulsion. It's quite rare i hear a song and just hate it automatically from the start.

Seriously you were a kid when Nine Inch Nails did that one? I feel old now. LOL

I'd agree with Bri, that it all depends on opinions and what you started off with.

Personally I think there is a lot of bad music floating around today (that Nicki Minaj song being a prime example). The problem with it is that a lot of the bad music these days is catchy. I may hate a song but still find myself singing along to it, and people say that one way to get a song out of your head is to listen to it: hence bad songs get bought and listened to (or there may be some people out there who actually like it :? ).
I'd agree that a lot of the songs around at the moment have no real meaning to them and have rubbish lyrics, but at the same time they are great if you just want to dance around to something with a good beat. I don't think you can always judge a song on its lyrics, as there is some music that is just meant to be a laugh to listen to but that shouldn't make it bad music.
And on the other end of the spectrum there are plenty of good artists out there who make good music. You can't really judge the whole of today's music based on just one or two artists - there are millions of them out there! They may not all be popular but that doesn't mean they're not there.

Give me Fleetwood Mac over Nicki Minaj any day, but I won't say no to modern music in general.

Current fave hip-hop (ish)- NSFW!

No music (there is a version with music but I think this illustrates how hip-hop/rap can be poetry) but beautiful and sad.

With music:

Well, having just gotten back from an 80's-themed prom, I'd definitely have to vote classic rock. XD There are so many fantastic songs, I love the talent found in the instrumentals, and the lyrics are amazing.

Even though my vote does go to classic, I really do listen to a really wide range of music. Country, a bit of hip-hop, the odd metal song, remixes. There are a good number of pop artist I do enjoy. But never Nikki Minaj. Never.
