i am having a serious problem with gettin to the stall when doing an arm roll, i cant seem to do it:( i can do an outside arm roll, inside, inside stall as well as the folding line but the outside stall eludes me. if i place it in the stall i can hold it all day and do alot of stuff whilst holding the stall.

any help would be great appreciated. if it helps i could take a video of me attempting a stall so yall can see exactly what im doing wrong.

If you've got the stall super-solid, the roll is just a matter of practice. It takes approximately 324832940328523 tries.

If "alot of stuff whilst holding the stall" doesn't include doing tiny tosses and catches in the stall, do those... it'll help.

If it's any consolation, virtually everyone I've ever known who's learned to roll to an outer elbow stalls has had a similar story when starting out. As Richard says, once you have the stall itself solid, the next step is a goodly amount of practice.

Without knowing exactly what you're doing I'll also throw in the old classic of "slow down". Learn to control the ball along the entirety of your arm and don't rush it. A lot of people starting out tend to move the ball from the cradle to the elbow as fast as possible, so as to not give it a chance to fall off. The consequence is that this makes stopping at the elbow rather more difficult.

May or may not apply in your case.

I usually tell people to do roughly the following:

Start out by placing the ball there. Then play around with the angle of your forearm to upper arm, your forearm to the floor, and the positioning of your hand. Figure out the position that's best for you to stall.

Put your body that way, and stall for a bit. When that's comfortable, walk around with the ball stalled. Sit down and get up with the ball stalled. Get the stall itself rock solid.

Then practice rolling the ball from the stall to the hand. Get that nice and controlled.

Then practice rolling on the forearm past the stall and letting it drop off onto the other hand. Progressively slow this down, but don't try to stall it yet. Just practice the motion of the ball up the forearm.

Now you've got everything about the stall other than getting the ball there by rolling. Practice that part now.

And if it's not obvious, practice on your off hand side until you achieve a symmetrical degree of proficiency.

The way it worked for me was actually catching the ball in the stall from either a cradle pop to outside elbow stall or a fly away to stall. then Id roll the ball from the ( caught ) outside elbow ball to cradle, and try rolling it back up and stopping it in the stall, lather rinse repeat. rolling the ball up your arm and stopping it in different points/spots and rolling it back down to the cradle and back up, slowly going further up your arm, closer to your elbow stall point may help too, not long stops, just long enough to pause the roll for a second and change the direction.
