If you can balance a ball on top of your head, respond with what ball you use. Be specific.
I want to know if there is a pattern or if some are easier to balance then others. Also if you have hair on your head post that as well.

I am trying to learn with 100mm play stage ball.

Thanks

I learned with a busted 4" acrylic. I have hair and guess that's a pain, though I've never not had it so I don't have a basis for comparison.

Just get it there and hold reallllllly still. Moving comes eventually. Just keep challenging yourself without rushing ahead.

Stage ball will be harder but that'll just mean you spend more time working on it until you get it. I think drilling with a stage ball is eventually ideal, but you might wanna try with an acrylic so early success can spur you to practice more.

I don't know how comfortable I feel about resting my 4in or even 3in acrylic on my head. I've been using a sand filled juggling bag of mine and feel I've made progress with that. If nothing else I feel it's great for posture. I'm contemplating an orange or grapefruit. I feel it would "grip" more than a stage ball.

Haha, learning a stall is about being uncomfortable, not comfortable ;)

Grip doesn't matter since the thing is sitting on top of your head... and fruits are less balanced than juggling props. Acrylics are definitely dangerous for practicing headstalls, but if you've got some grass around (or just a busted ball you don't have to worry about) you'll be fine...

You learn very quickly to catch the ball once it rolls off your head. Pretty soon you don't even need to look in order to be able to catch it. Once you have that down, acrylics are no problem...

...with one notable exception! Talking about grass implies outdoor practice, Richard. Balance a clear acrylic on your head in bright sunshine and you'll soon learn a painful lesson about the dangers of acrylics and headstalls :)

Well right, of course you're practicing in the shade ;)

I'm learning okay with my Play 100mm stageball. My stalls are fairly steady now but I'm having no success with rolls yet.

without question, i believe the best ball for learning headstalls is this one: http://www.firetoys.co.uk/juggling/DX_P ... _62mm.html

because of the manufactiure of the ball, you can make a small flat spot on the side, making it easier to balance on your head when you are starting out, but it stays round enough and is heavy enough to form a good stall point on your head. the smaller size of the ball means a lower centre of gravity, and the ability to shape it to your head means you can pick precisely where you want to form your dent - remember to use a mirror if you want it dead centre.

Sil-x balls are really nice for stalls but they're a little more challenging for headrolling due to the slosh factor

I've been alternating heavy stage ball, standard stage ball (both 100mm) and my 85mm acrylic.
Still can't do it for more than 10-20 seconds yet :)

I have my stall point pretty solid now and I: always practiced with a 100mm full-filled stage ball.
sometime I do it with a 100mm acrylic but not always.
Practice the stall for a long time, I watch movies and series with a ball on my head, it will make the dent faster and you'll get your stall more solid faster...
I cut my hair and it's really easier without it, but you can choose, I could do it when I had hair too...

I don't have a favourite ball...

...I have a full head of dreads so noone really thinks it's that much of an achievment keeping a ball up there, and to be honest I find the whole thing a bit ridiculous. (sorry guys- i'm not saying that it doesn't take skill and practice to be able to do it, but there are so many more exciting things to do with the ball!) spend your precious time better by learning other things I say.

No need to harsh the vibe, dude.

Spoken like someone who never learned top of the head stall. :D

It's one of the best things I've ever learned.

I like Bazz's idea (welcome back bazz!) for learning. I started on a 100mm russian then decided not to cheat.

120mm acrylic all the way, it just wants to stay there and dig down into your brain
