Hi fellow fellows!

I'm all confused just this minute. I was looking for a solution to strong sunlight burning my paper skin, so I went on neonhusky and homeofpoi and found out about a bunch of types of balls I didn't know. I found there was a difference between clear acrylic and crystal ball... do they both "burn" (focus light) as much? What about other colored acrylics, is aqua blue enough to stop the sunlight or do you need black? And what about UV balls?

I also saw there was chrome, steel,... what are your thoughts on those?

Thanks a lot =)

UPDATE: After a bit of having fun in the sun, I realized clear acrylics, even in the worst conditions, are definitely juggle-able and only stalls have to be accelerated. So thanks for all the info my friends, see ya soon!

If you can see through an acrylic, it can burn you.
You should be safe with a black one!
Actual crystal balls are generally to heavy to use, although its not unheard of.

I say get a stage ball!

RE: appearance, only an unblemished acrylic ball is fit for close-up performance (walkaround/roaming/busking). The exception is if you are so good at enigmas that you can always make sure the scar is under your finger or on the bottom of the ball, but that's a pretty significant distraction and by the time your enigmas are that good you can afford to just buy a new ball for street shows :)

Stage balls have seams and metal balls are never at the right finish to pull off a really convincing close-up isolation. However, those balls are perfectly suitable for stage performances since folks can't really see a seam/bruise/crack on the ball past about 3m (10ft).

Don't do glass/crystal balls - you'll wreck your joints.

wow thanks for the replies, good stuff!

I think I'll just buy a blue 95 mm acrylic off home of poi as my "im scared of the sun" substitute, unless someone who has one warns me beforehand that they still do burn skin, which would surprise me.

Thanks infinitely my friends, the community here is lovely <3

I think the home of poi coloured acrylics are still See through (my orange one is) and so will still work as a lens focussing the light to a focal point that will burn.

yes but the light is diminished, I think it'll be like the effect of a light cloud passing in front of the sun only that cloud is in your ball =P dunno if im wrong though

What will happen is that there will be slightly less energy to the light as you are removing some of the wave lengths so you will likely have a little longer before the burn. You can get solid colour acrylics which remove even that worry.
A quick experiment with my clear and my orange acrylic and a strong LED torch (700 lumen) showed no significant visible difference in the intensity of the hot spot that is focussed.

I have two of that exact ball, I find that getting burnt is not a common problem with them, certainly better than a clear acrylic. They do still burn hair very easily though, which for the first time is hard to remember with the top of the head balance.

And I could not recommend them more highly, they are beautiful :)
