Learning didn't hurt my knuckles either, the reason being I used a stage ball,saves:
a) the finish on your acrylics
b) your delicate ornaments
c) setting your house on fire
d) yourself from pain!
Use a stage ball for most of your practice, until it no longer hurts to use the acrylic.
They are definitely the right tool for making cj look awesome, but not perfect for learning it.
