Sweet, very sweet.

Hennem-esque, but very sweet!

Nice to see your stuff again, it's been too long.

In-fact, I'm going to watch Hangar Fun again now..

Hennem-esque for sure. I began this project by rembering a conversation I had with Matt when he was telling me about the amount of editing/color correct/etc that he had to do for Liquid Crystal. And then I was like ''I wonder if I can get that kind of footage quality with my set-up here in Vancouver?.." since i've been doing a lot of video production recently (thanks to www.vancouvercircusschool.ca) i decided to make a project out of it. Took about a week... and this was the result!

<stares across the room at the growing pile of DV tapes that still need editing...>
<decides to leave the house for a while, and goes for a walk>

I like that little 4-ball sequence.
three questions:
how did you get the background so dark?
what did you use for lighting, just a desk lamp off to the side?
how/did you plan the editing?

well done.
(don't neglect those tapes too long)

Hi Zoc.

I been learning about footage correction; the original footage looks nothing like the final cut. I shot in front of a blue wall; chroma-keyed the blue out and then tweaked. The stuff I shot during strong, natural light (coming in strong through the window) turned out the best as it gave me the biggest range of colors and depths to work with. Any other lighting came from a 4 point spotlights above (I've been setting up this studio for a while)

The editing was the main job. I did 3 phases of cuts, each night shooting new footage and then reviewing the hour, cutting out and saving only the good bits. Each new day I would go back and do another shoot, knowing what kind of footage looked good and what didnt. So by the end of 3 days I had (still have!) 3 hours of decent material. Then it was more cutting, correcting light levels and color; after a couple days I had things down to 5 minutes. In the end I decided it was too long, cut the song in half and ruthlessly cut out (some of my favorite) footage to get everything to fit together. A bit of polish on the final edits; clean things up and lock them on the rythm, and voila- a classy new video.

As for the juggling; its all kinda old stuff (well, old to me!!!) but I love how this footage captures the feeling of the light on those props; for me; with the music; its really close to the aesthetic I like. Really inspired by the minimal feeling of Matt's Liquid Crystal.

Ryan, would you be willing to post a few clips of unedited work so we can see where you started out from to achieve the results you did? I'm very curious about the process.
