I haven't gone busking personally yet, but I've always been curious, since you have your container that holds your earnings, and seeing as we are performers we can't always keep the most watchful eye on our stuff. How do you deal with some punk that tries to steal your well earned money?? Do you chase after him, do you Just let him go, do you try and get anyone to help??

Also, what's been your worst experience with a situation like this??

A friend of mine had his hat (and the money in it) stolen while he was playing music during an event last year.

I've never had any issues myself.

never been a problem.
Usually people call the cops when someone has stolen things from them.

While I’ve never busked I’ve performed in public no end of times.
I was once getting a load of lip from a MOP who’s knuckles dragged across the floor, we’ve all met the type.
Doesn’t understand it so wants to smash it. I was getting really fed up with it and was ready to say something insulting (but hopefully funny)
to them when Low and behold human nature kicked in and a couple of people in the audience told him where to go.
Guess what I’m saying is don’t underestimate human nature. We’re not that bad.

Never been a problem for me either- But I'd say a general rule of thumb is that you keep your hat/box/guitar case somewhere not too far away. Generally, people will make a circle around you [and your stash] and its pretty apparent when people are walking into the circle to give you money. If someone is making a mad dash towards your stash, then you may have to re-think this post.

Also- DON'T FORGET THE SEED MONEY!

Ah yes, seed money. How much is too much for that? I'm going to try busking this summer.

I recommend this website http://www.buskercentral.com/ There's a good amount of really helpful information.

More than a dollar, always less than half full. Not because of thieves, but because people become less likely to donate if you're already making money. It's like this kind of "Meh, he'll eat" effect that is really good at preventing you from making rent/phone bill money.

Which reminds me...

to be honest in the north of the UK you ALWAYS have to deal with theives - best method I have found is to periodically take out your earnings from your hat and transfer to your kit bag, leaving some seed money - as people say most audience members will stop your main kit bag going, but Ive had my hat whisked away/ people taking out as they 'put money in' more times than I care to think - at least when they do its never more that a few pounds at a time.

Never chase, you'll just end up in more bother!
