So 5 minutes before close, the restaurant lands 2 tables of 10 and knowing I'll be there a while on this lovely sunday evening, I sit up front and do some juggling :D

Meanwhile sitting off on their own away from the big tops, a table of two watches me and when they leave they compliment my mad skillz and ask me about the art. Long story short the couple owns the Gelato shop down the street that I've always wanted to go to and they would be delighted to have me perform on busy nights :D

Great isn't it?

I figure gimme free dessert and a tip jar and I'll be a happy camper :3

Thoughts?

Thoughts are that a business should be paying you more than $.50 an hour plus tips if you're going to be their resident artist, which is about what you're making if you're performing for ice cream...

...on the other hand, it's always nice to take a girl out for gelato and have the server refuse to take your money. But don't sell yourself short, if for no other reason than pissing off your local colleagues who keep getting offers to work for ice cream when they have bills to pay.

I've had that on my mind. The way I see it is more as a stepping stone personally. I started off in a mall practicing for free...now I'm branching out to a venue of sorts where pretty much anything could be better than nothing.

In a perfect world though I would be hired on as an actual employee where my job title would entail me to entertain vs making ice cream.

Yeah, I mean it's possible. I did my stints on the street at $30/day for sure, and did years of free shows to boot (and still do them). But that was largely on the street or in a small start-up circus, not at a place of business where they are making enough money to pay everyone else... why not you? Because you're a sucker? If you're out there doing marketing for them, you better be getting money out of their advertising budget or you're getting ripped off. It's not a perfect world, but you're not a chump either.

Here is a very good and general reference: http://www.shouldiworkforfree.com

Agreed with Richard.
Do it tactfully though, maybe do the first few times for tips and ice cream, but if it goes well, ask for some cash.
Ive also done more volunteer/free gigs than I can count, but about half the time I get a paid gig from someone who was put in touch with me from the volunteer gig. I like to think that they pay off in their own way

This is called "paying dues"

it is also called "never being able to raise your bid because your clients keep telling their friends that they found a juggler who will work for tips and ice cream"

The general rule I heard is that people who won't pay you will only give you "good exposure" to other people who are unlikely to pay you. This also works the other way around for paying clients, who usually lead you to other paying clients.

True true, but being paid half the time is better than not being paid at all. The more exposure you get the better, you never know who might be in the audience watching. Ive had plenty of free gigs where Ive met people ( who areant connected with client that brought me on board with the free gig) who have hired me on for gigs that pay 400 or more. People who hire you onto gigs usually are doing a million other things all at once. No matter how well you perform you'll make a bigger impact on the people that show up to the event than the event coordinators themselves. At least thats what Ive gained from my experience performing
