I'll quote are good friend Bri here:

Here is a recipe for 'not as painful' poi.

*Get a large square of plastic wrap [the kind you cover food with] put in 1/3 of a cup to 1/2 cup of baking flour.
*Roll up plastic over flour carefully [and not too tight] and run a piece of tape around the circumference so the tape goes over itself once [insuring it wont slip off the plastic wrap].
THERE IS NO NEED TO COMPLETELY COVER THE PLASTIC WITH TAPE- This will only lead to more pain in the future.
*Thirdly, put the plastic & flour combination into an old sock. When the flour bag is at the bottom of the sock, grab the sock just over the flour and twist until you've trapped it in the bottom. Then roll the open end of the sock inside-out and over your flour bag again so that it now has two layers of sock over it.
*Put your new Flour/plastic wrap/sock combo into your poi and SWING AWAY!

I have hit myself square in the face with this poi combo and the only thing that will hurt is your pride."

Been learning with this, it is far less painful for us noobs to poi.
But would love to learn to make cooler ones for when i'm hitting myself less.

Hey Cory, this was a great article, thanks.

I attended a good workshop last year on constructing fire poi but it was more about assembling quality chains, swivel links and handles than making cathedral heads. The wicks we used were pre purchased from HOP. It's great to have a resource for making them in their entirety!

:D Thanks for the repost, Rook.

And as an FYI- that poi recipe came straight from Dai Zaobab. We were making some poi at Sennyo's house last year and that was what we found to be best. And thus far, it hasn't failed me!

The other decent thing about it, is that you can always make a larger poi head by simply adding more flour to your mixture~ TADAAAA!
