Leg rolls are where I am focused. It's hard. I practice daily and sometimes it's good, sometimes its not.
More and more I realize (through mistakes) what possibilities there are in the leg rolls. Then it came to me..
"what if my legs were arms"

All of the patterns one can do with arms, there has to be some versions in the legs, right?

Legs are more difficult, as you are constrained by one's own need to balance on one of them and hold the ball. Unless you are on the floor which gives it's own constraints as well...

*dreaming*

What IS possible?
what if my legs were arms? can I do folding legs?
Anyway...

and it just occurred to me...
Stools. You can sit and move on a stool and just focus on the legs without having to stand!

why hadn't I considered it earlier?

I'm liking this topic...Lately I've been feeling like I'll become limited if I keep just using the upper half of my body, and have been trying to think of ways to utilize my legs. So far I've only been practicing one specific movement, but I'm pretty excited about it. I'm excited to see what you'll come up with by having stool practice!

...Ooh, and that just gave me an idea. Instead of a stool, a yoga ball!

Hey Dawn!
I see on .org you've been working on leg rolls alot.
Any advise for a complete beginner to leg rolls?

I got this question today!

Kyle is much better at this - as he's taught workshops. I learned from him.

Start - balancing
Foot catches, foot throws, knee balance

Now these can all be done in different ways - top of the knee, side of the knee, cradle of the foot, on the point of your foot (when leg stretched in front of you)

I still cannot catch! :(

That said, I started trying leg rolls by throwing from my foot to my knee & then making it smaller and smaller... (like a butterfly throw from palm to cradle)

My technique is not good, however. The longer rolls and nicest looking techniques are from the side, but my groin is not flexible enough yet.

Bringing me to another point - stretch!!

That's my initial reaction to that.
Awesome. More leg rolling please.
D

I surprised myself last night trying the Brunn roll...the ball got about halfway to my knee. I'm still working on the foot cradle, and it usually ends up just falling off one way or the other once I get it a couple inches in the air.

The last video posted is awesome but it's kinda odd watching it now that I realize who the guy reminds me of; He has sorta the same hairstyle and body type of this guy in a town near where I grew up who (to this day) wanders the streets randomly making strange gestures and blurting out odd things.

Just took Cyrille's workshop on big body rolls, and everything dawn has said is correct. I think for leg rolls is mostly about putting in the time to hold you leg in the air getting used to it being there and having the strength and flexibility to really be able to create control.

Okay, so adding onto this thread...Last night I found myself having one of my practice sessions that somehow turned into me playing around with wacky and different movements/objects/etc, etc. At one point I was thinking about balance and laying on my back with my leg straight up in the air with a ball on top of my foot. The thought suddenly came to mind, "Wonder if anyone's ever done a foot isolation?" That's when my brain exploded...not only that, but foot transfers and foot butterflies, etc etc. Even if I have no place right now in any act for something like this...Holy crap, I've gotta start trying all that!!!

Heehee...feet butterflies. Feeterflies?
