Usually it doesn't get that ugly. If you really f with the police then they'll arrest you, potentially leaving your gear and hat high and dry on the street for the scavengers to take home, but that's a pretty extreme situation and I've never heard of anything like that happening in the middle of a show. Usually they'll just come tell you to move along.

As long as you don't give the police aggro and move on when asked you should be OK (well other than the crime of being American whilst in France) because arresting you creates a lot of paperwork for very little return, well usually. Oh and don't get caught by the same cop twice!
