It's like this kind of "Meh, he'll eat" effect that is really good at preventing you from making rent/phone bill money.

Which reminds me...

Is that why you ask for rides from your housemates over facebook lolz?

Ive only had an attempt on my hat once. The thief grabbed the hat full and started run when some one else grabbed the hat and spilled the money all over the place. The thief ran off and a few people helped me gather the money up.

My best recommendation is to create a full scripted show and only collect donations at the end. not only will you probably make more money, but no one will have a chance to steal it because it goes directly to you.

The Main Rule!
Don't focus on the little bit that a thief can grab, remember all your stuff that you leave behind if you get distracted/or give chase.

I know a guy who lost all his performing gear like this.

I had an acylic taken from my hand once. In over 15 years. I can live with that and without worrying about the tiny losses from dippers.(I'm on a plinth and when I get an obvious dipper, I jump down and my boot lands across the top of my tips bucket, no-ones ever tried to dip my bucket twice, and quite a few have handed the stolen money back.)
It happens rarely, even in Manchester, maybe 6-8 times in my whole career.

In short, it's not your biggest problem, worry about something else!

Silver.

PS I like guitarplaya's answer too.

I'm not at a high enough performance level where I perform yet, but I ran into a thief a time or two. Had someone tag me in the back of the head with a brick AFTER I GAVE HIM SOME MONEY out of the kindness of my heart, so I called the cops and they did nothing, after that I came to realize that a thief needs to be dealt with Swiftly and Harshly. The doc said alot of people would'my have survived the blow i took, and when your life is brought into the equation, all the turn the other cheek sayings become the enemy. That's just my experience though.

In a thread about how to deal with thieves I sincerely hope you won't have to! ;)

Ive had to deal with plenty of thieves when I brought out my bass case and equipment,,

I always keep my stuff in front of me and I actually have a little sign in my case saying, "Jus toss it in, im a juggler ^-^" and that usually keeps people in a good mood and sometimes people practice tossing it inside the case, [of course they have to reach into their pockets for more "ammo" ;) ]

I remember once someone tried to snatch and launch, but since I always had my case within a lunging distance, everytime they tried to book i could kick the bass case door shut, and because it is a big case it actually hurts them,, and before they pull their hands out and sprawl I usually give them a Spartan kick to the face.

This is how you deal with thieves. And the thing is thieves are like jugglers, very family oriented, if its easy to get a snatch from you, all of their "budsos" know. But if you break a hand and a jaw once or 5 times they will learn their lesson.

There was one time that they got away with it, but because I was more of a popular local at the time, the crowd actually found them and took matters into their own hands =D

So the best way to deal with thieves is to be confident and powerfully aggressive when the moment is right; extremely peaceful, charismatic, and energetic with your crowds; and become a popular local,,

When the audience knows that you are having trouble with life when you give your all to them,, and NEVER I SWEAR NEVER! give them the same routine or anything similar twice in a week, you'll be a straight ^-^
