Mmm.. good question.
Yuki (who edited the Vancouver video) was telling people on FB to register and vote for his video. people were asking where the voting happened (Yuki only linked to the youtube version) and so i pasted the link to this site, and voila! 5 more votes for Vancouver.

Agreed, the voting should really only be done by established forum members (perhaps with at least 10 posts to their name? Otherwise I could just MoM the video i liked best and drown out the competition.
mebbe we can peek into the voting system and see how many votes have been casted by supernew members, and then remove the votes?

No, just post count to show that the users have at least been mildly active, or a 'joined by' date restriction.
Try as I might, I can't seem to figure out where to pull up the poll administration in the board settings, so I will see if iMark knows how to sort this out.

That's a good question. I know i've been a bit torn because I would like to post a link to our video on fb simply to share with friends, but kind of feel like waiting until the voting is over. Though I cannot lie, I did ask my brother to sign up on the forums and vote for the ftl crew ^^, simply because I bombard him with videos from here anyways hehe.

iMark, I am soo looking forward to next year, can't wait to see what you and your crew come up with. And if your in doubt about having a crew for the next year, just play in the ftl thread hehe *hugs*

You can post the video on facebook, just don't ask people to register to vote. There's no problem with posting your video to show everyone how OMG AWESOME you are!

Most of the contact jugglers in Vancouver don't necessarily post on .org, but they are contact jugglers, should they not be encouraged to join the online community with us?

If people are going to be encouraged to join, veteran or noob, I don't feel it should be through voting for something.
On that note, if they happen to make the choice to vote after joining they shouldn't be led, by either inside or outside .org, to make a decision. They deserve to choose for themselves which video like the most.

But these people were encouraged to be a part of the video in the first place...
Should I not have included people outside of .org in the video itself?

I think the question being ask was identifying the general public rather than those who were in the videos.
For instance, going on facebook and other sites and telling all your friends to join .org so you can vote for a video.

but that's where communication with those people happen. I don't even have Quinn's email...
I'm not so sure you can distinguish between the two.

Honestly, my take is that voting is completely incidental to the videos. I think the spirit should be to get people together to make videos, and the voting afterwards is just a bit of fun. I'd worry if people took the results of the vote too seriously.

If people want to spread their videos far and wide, and get new people on the site to, I don't have a problem with that. But so long as it's kept in the spirit of fun, m'kay.

At last! I am really glad there is one person who thinks this way! I have been reading the last couple of days what is written in here and some people do seem to worry a lot about that voting thing and the results of it, and i say they shouldn't ;)

Quite, it was good fun to do. Getting footage from around the world and chatting to new friends was great, it also gave me the impetus to go to the Bristol con and meet Lapwing!

Yes, all of us are on the same page here as far as agreeing that the voting is just part of the light hearted competition. I agree too.

I hesitated to bring this up because I didn't want it to become misunderstood where I was coming from.

But...that doesn't solve the rules. When anyone plays a game, even for pure fun. The rules have to be clear. And this is the only problem. A new factor has been added in that makes a little fuzziness as far as the nature of the game.

If a prop person ends up on dotorg and stays here because of being connected to this competition, I don't see how that can be wrong. Always awesome to have a new contributor to the forum. I'm guessing that is what you are saying, Dawn?

The issue I was talking about was putting it out on facebook to the open general public. That is a vastly different thing. If it's put out to the open public, then that changes the nature of the game. That's then intentionally pulling in votes and making this game into something it wasn't, more of a real competition. Some people are naturally more competitive than others and it can turn from fun to not fun if the nature and feeling of the game is changes.

This game was started pretty much saying, grab your prop friends and put a lot of effort into it. If we are encouraging people to do that, then there grows some passion behind how much effort they put into this.

It would have been better if this subject was noticed and decided before the voting came into play. Again, I'll go with whatever.

So, I do think there is a difference. If a serious prop person is brought to dotorg through the video and being somehow connected to the video, should be fine, I think. Putting it out to the open public where friends and acquaintances and people you don't even know can flood dotorg with no intention of ever coming back, I'm thinking that's not such a good idea if we want to keep this lighthearted and fun.
