fair enough but it makes it much harder to do techy geeky stuff, I still reckon sock poi are more fun to use, plus you get to fully customise your new toys.

I like customizing stuff, it's always lots of fun and if you're a little good with sewing you can make friends envious (or sell your toys?)

String poi has been very popular for various reasons, the techy stuff only seems to be a problem if you are talking about hyper-loops... However, on the other side of techy poi- poggling (juggling while spinning poi) feels impossible with sock poi....

I would say that poi is DRASTICALLY easier than contact, and would take much less time to master if compared. (IMHO)

apples and cellotape

Poi is, imo, hard as you make it. Probably.

Try counter weighting the handle, so tie the sock off 2/3rds of the way up, add some more weight (about a third of the main weight) as a handle then tie off again.

Works nicely for wibbles and other toss moves. All of my poi spinning (which has taken a major back seat in the last year) is influenced by the Edinburgh crew and nobody spins with string poi here.

Apparently Drew's bright orange poi are some of the best, I played with a set someone had a while ago and am inclined to agree.

i've done a little flag, got a pair for one of my stilt costumes.
five and a half foot poles with 4'x6' flags.
not the easiest thing in the world, but makes a wonderfully huge image.
i'm in the process of sorting spinners for the flags so i don't have to worry about wraps anymore.

thinks:must go play with flags..

actually, I have wanted to get into wibbling... which requires sock poi.. Sock poi are, of course, ridiculously easy to make!

Flags are BEAUTIFUL when they are done nicely!

UV flags are something special as well, and the noise that flags make is beautiful.

so i stuffed a juggling ball into the end of two long socks and had a go with poi
i picked up contact a lot faster than im picking up poi, and with contact i had less blows to the face

ahh poi... my major love been spinning near on 2 years now and learning a few moves and flow are 2 very VERY different things but the one thing i will say is that learning your first few moves with poi are a million times easier than learning your first contact juggling move!
