I'm a beginner, and I still use the 3" Kong doggy ball that I got at Petco, for most practice. It's not as heavy as acrylic, but it's okay. I was going to get a stage ball but the doggy ball is working fine. Because it's hard rubber, I don't worry about dropping it, so I'm less inhibited about practicing with it. I also have some acrylics: a 2.75", a couple of 3.5", and a 4", and I practice with them too, once I get a basic feel for a move. I have big hands, even for a man. The 3.5" feels about right. The 4" still feels too heavy to control, but I figure I'll grow into it.

I do better with the acrylics if I'm outside in a grassy place where I don't worry about dropping them, although they can still get scratched that way. But as a beginner it's no good practicing when/where you can't feel at ease about dropping.

Life has been complicated lately, and I'm not getting as much practice as I'd like, but I still spend some time each day working on a small number of moves. For isolations, I just use acrylics, because the doggy ball just doesn't do it for me.
