I've been doing this as a kinda stall in the middle of palm to back butterfly. I do a butterfly, say two or three times, then as I slide the ball up my palm and my hand goes vertical I stall in (as I now know its name I'll use it) tripod grip. Holding the ball there for a few seconds I then continue the motion of the butterfly, letting the ball settle into the back of my hand.

I was doing that move 5 years ago, do it correctly if you are going to do it. Tighten up the tripod to where the pointer and ring finger are behind the middle finger. It looks like a wizard holding a crystal ball. Thanks a bunch, it just looks nicer, trust me.
