This is probably common knowledge around here, but I just found out last night, and it greatly upset me.

Growing up, one of my favorite movies was always Labyrinth. You know, the Jim Hensen movie where David Bowie plays the evil goblin king? I liked it as a kid for the puppets and the story, and later on I appreciated it as an actor because I thought it was really cool that Bowie learned to handle the crystal orbs as effectively as he did for that movie...or so it seemed. Now, my girlfriend didn't know what contact juggling was and hadn't seen Labyrinth, so I decided we'd rent it and watch it both because it's a good movie and so she'd know what I was talking about when I said I was learning contact juggling. Well, we rented the dvd, watched it, and then decided to watch the "Making Of" documentary in the special features. Sure enough, there was a segment of the documentary about contact juggling...and it turns out that David Bowie doesn't actually know how to contact juggle...the juggling in that film was done by none other than Michael Moschen, who was working totally blind by sticking his arms up through Bowie's costume in such a way that it looked like Bowie was doing all the sphereplay.

Now, this speaks very well of Michael Moschen for being able to juggle blind in such awkward positions, but it upset me tremendously because I've been suffering under the false belief that David Bowie knows how to contact juggle...it's almost like finding out Santa's not real all over again

haha, i am so sad to hear that you have been so jaded. Many of have known for many years, and we try to inform as people ask. In fact when I give lessons to people who comment on Labyrinth I try to make a point of informing them how you can even accomplish this art blind because it is more feel than sight(for the artist, not audience). Hope you still love the performance, and it's still a good movie

My biggest question about the whole thing is why they didn't just teach David Bowie to contact juggle? They spent ages writing that script, building sets, creating puppets, etc., and they had Moschen himself working on the project...so why not just get Moschen to teach Bowie the art? He wouldn't have had to learn that much, really. The movie included a butterfly, a circle, and some multiball. All in all he probably could have learned it well enough to do it for the movie in a month or two, tops.

The thing was Moschen had years and years of experience, and it was at a time when there was only really his act out there. It would also be quite a lot to demand from Bowie who I can imagine was a little bit busy in the 80s, writing and performing material that wasn't quite as good as his 70s stuff...
