might be mirrors. i'd say 2.
The camera looks just the way you'd see it if you were in front (left hand side on right hand side for the one pictured).

silver was actually [and maybe obviously] behind the camera. The red on the left of the picture might be due to the "anti red eye" flash of the camera.
as the picture is through a ball (4" ?), i guess the picture has been rotated.

but.. no i really don't understand exactly how the mirror can have been placed to obtain this effect...

I'd say its a reflection in a metal sphere. The first image was simply silver on the left of a ball with a red torch on. shut it off, move to the right turn on a white torch. viola. Least thats my guess.

My friends and I used to do some fun stuff with long exposure. We'd sit perfectly still for half of it and then move one arm for the second half so it looked like you had 2 arms. Or go outside when its perfectly dark and run around with a strobe light lighting up your face. Tons of creepy faces floating around And then of course all those fire shots.

If I ever get my hands on a camera with an unlimited exposure setting, I'd take a fun picture in like a classroom. Lights off, sit in one seat, lights on. Lights off, switch seat, lights on. Repeat until it looks like your sitting in every chair. I'd love to do this in a stadium where I'm randomly dispersed through the seats, but they metal halide lamps they use take way to long to turn on and off.
