zxenor: One thing I found to help is to practice the four ball collapsed diamond spin first, then work it into a square, then add the 5th ball for the pyramid. And also, to smooth it out, try practicing with a big, heavy ball on top. It makes it much harder, but when you change to a smaller ball, it automatically smoothes it out.
RSS: I find it much harder to do a 4 ball square without the 5th ball on top because the pattern lacks the rigidity that you get with the pyramid. The 5th ball locks the others into place. The way I learnt it was by using one finger of the other hand to just lightly touch each ball as it comes past the tricky point on the inside where it is likely to fall off. You will quickly find that you are using less and less pressure until the other hand is not needed at all.

really 4 ball pyramid with one floater

I am having troubles keeping all of the balls in contact with each other, normally one is just extra and then switches with another which takes its place as the "floater" I call it that cause it is not needed

do you mean that one of the lower four balls feels like a "fifth wheel"? it sounds like you're doing a four ball pyramid with an extra...if this is the case, then try to figure out with the center of the spin should be...if you noticed, a 2-ball and 3-ball palmspin each have different centers...the same is true with 4-ball palmspins. if you can find this new center, try to keep the top ball isolated while spinning the bottom, and maybe it'll help you smooth things out

thanks for the advice, I finally got it but I found I had to have my focus point on index to thumb and keeping it closer,
