Well, the easist way I have found to learn this trick is to do 2 ball seperated palmspins in each hand. Every couple of revolutions, pass the ball in your left hand to the right at the fingertips, and the ball in the right hand to your left at the palm. They should pass at the same time, meaning your palmspins have to be somewhat in sync.

how does one go about learning this?

start with the two ball version (not on the site, I think), making sure that each ball travels the whole length of the hand (heel to finger, and vice-versa) before passing across.

Then do the same with three ball, and finally four.

See how the hands are not aligned perfectly with one another as in the 2b variation of this move? Also, the pinkie fingers overlap for the 4b version, and do not in the 2b. I found that that helped me a bit, instead of learning it through trial and error.

There is no reason not to line up the hands perfectly or to overlap the little fingers, that is just the way that Shifty learned this trick. I personally prefer keeping the hands lined up and not crossing the fingers because then when you reverse the direction there is no need to adjust your hand positions and the transition can be made more smoothly.
