A 2.5" stage ball would be way to light to learn with, if not filled with sand or water.
I'm sure that you'll be able to use a larger ball. Lots of people here use 4" acrylics. I use 4" stage balls myself. I'm sure that if you try it a little you'll find that a 3" stage ball isn't a problem. And you'll soon enough be able to use a 3" acrylic.
