I actually don't remember having that particular problem, so no you have heard about someone. :)
I however agree that it sounds like something very reasonable to experince in the begining. I'm sure that the pain will disappear quickly, not because the knuckles get hardned but because your <ul>body</ul> will figure out how to do things right.
If it hurts too much, rest for a while and try again. Don't try to think too much about what you're doing and what may be wrong, but then you do the throw and catch in cradle exercise, make sure that you're not catching with the hand hold still. Meet the ball and follow it down so that you can stop the ball slowly.
