 Wmv problems

I havr some ideas for moves to submit to the site, but when i record with my computer camera it can only save as .wmv files, which Jasc animation shop doesn't recognise, thus disabling me to turn it into a gif file. Does anyone know where i can get a relaible freeware program that can convert .wmv files into avi files?
